Global Change Institute

The Global Change Institute (GCI) is a unique institute in Australia. In the past, the GCI has worked to address the impacts of climate change and population growth through collaborative research across themes such as clean energy, food systems, and healthy oceans. It has acted as an important voice of independent innovative research, ideas, policy and advice for addressing the challenges of a changing world. The GCI has worked across both public and private sectors and has played an important role in creating and shaping the national and global dialogue on climate change.

Established in 2010, GCI’s research activities have drawn on the expertise and constituent parts of UQ’s world-class faculties, institutes, research centres and central research platforms. Everything about the GCI has been focused on the future, including its $32m ‘Living Building’, which has become an international showcase for sustainability, geopolymer concrete and low-energy design.

Through recent university-wide consultation and feedback from our partners and investors, UQ is pivoting the operational model of GCI to ensure that UQ is positioned to deliver end user relevant solutions through transdisciplinary research practice. GCI is focused on solving global challenges with a new paradigm of design-driven research translation.

About This Opportunity

As the GCI is evolving to respond to changing external challenges and opportunities to generate substantial benefit to the economy, society and the environment, so is the role of its Director. Working closely with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), the Director will be a critical integrator and synthesiser of expertise across UQ, providing leadership within and external to the University.

As the Director, you will ensure that UQ remains globally recognised and sought after as a collaborative solutions hub, drive engagement with a diversity of stakeholders, facilitate extensive collaboration across the university, and be a visible presence in critical dialogues and debates nationally and globally. The role ensures innovative, collaborative transdisciplinary R&D at scale and with focus.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides, and with outstanding public transport connections, our 114-hectare site provides a perfect work environment – you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a vibrant campus with the tradition of an established university.

Our Ideal Candidate

As the ideal candidate, you will have a PhD with a proven record of outstanding contribution to research and/or innovation endeavours.

You will be a leading scholar and renowned practitioner of transdisciplinary research collaborations, with a track record of inspiring minds of the highest calibre. Your visionary leadership and entrepreneurial mindset should be complemented by your capability to work across sectors and disciplines, while engaging with a diverse range of stakeholders.

We value diversity and inclusion, and actively encourage applications from those who bring diversity to the University. Our Diversity and Inclusion webpage contains further information if you require additional support. Accessibility requirements and/or adjustments can be directed to
