The Faculty of Social Sciences is one of Sweden’s leading centres of knowledge for research and education in the social and behavioural sciences, with activities in both Lund and Helsingborg. The Department of Service Management and Service Studies is located in Campus Helsingborg.
The department conducts education and research to understand, problematise and contribute to the development of services and the service society. Critical societal perspectives are of particular importance to the department’s education and research. Teaching staff and researchers at the department represent different disciplinary fields and perspectives, such as service studies, ethnology, sociology, human geography, human ecology, environmental strategy and business administration, which combine to form the basis for our interdisciplinary education and research.
Our study programmes provide students with specific knowledge of services and their conditions and development in organisations and in society. The study programmes apply several different scholarly approaches to services, including social, economic, environmental, ethical, historical, spatial and cultural perspectives. Our teaching staff are also interested in developing teaching methods and tools to facilitate students’ learning.
Service Studies
Service Studies is a young and interdisciplinary research field focusing on investigating and problematising services. At the Department of Service Management and Service Studies, we examine services from a sustainable, economic, cultural and social perspective, moving between public and private service production. Service Studies is a subject which not only interrogates the service society on the basis of intellectual premises, but also identifies and problematises concrete issues defined by the sectors and organisations we study and collaborate with. The research is organised into five broad themes: consumption and retail, sustainability and services, organisation, management and service work, welfare services in the welfare society, and tourism and hospitality.
Cultural and Creativity Management
The department conducts research in cultural and creative activities from several perspectives, and we now aim to further reinforce this profile. The research proposed in the application should have a clear connection to a service studies perspective on cultural and creative activities. This may entail a focus on the development of services or governance, organisation and management within cultural and creative activities, consumption of this type of services, system-oriented perspectives on the field, the conditions of work within this type of activities, or other relevant issues. It is also possible to propose other research themes of relevance to service studies.
Duties
The PhD programme consists of 240 credits (equivalent to four years of full-time studies) and is concluded with the public defence of a doctoral thesis. The appointed doctoral student will receive a salary from the University during four years, and his or her main obligation is to complete their PhD studies, which primarily includes an independently written doctoral thesis. The position may involve departmental duties, mainly in the form of teaching, up to 20 per cent of fulltime working hours, in which case the appointment will be extended by the equivalent number of hours. The terms of employment for doctoral students are regulated in the Swedish Higher Education ordinance, Chapter 5, Sections 1-7.
The doctoral student is expected to be present and actively participate in the research environment in the department. The doctoral studentship will commence on 1 September 2019 or according to agreement. Eligibility
Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who
- have completed a second-cycle degree- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or
- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.
To meet the specific entry requirements the applicant must have completed at least 30 second cycle credits within the main field of Service Management or acquired the equivalent knowledge. The applicant must also have completed a master's degree project of at least 15 credits
The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.
Assessment criteria
The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance. The applicants will be ranked based on an overall assessment of the quality of their submitted degree projects and papers, research proposal, grades from previous studies, relevant work experience, and personal suitability. As third cycle studies in service Studies are very demanding, the applicant must be highly motivated and able to work independently under time constrains. Proficiency in both written and spoken English is also a requirement. A limited number of applicants will be asked to provide a written work sample during the final stages of the admission process, after which a shortlisted number of applicants will be called to interview.

a cover letter in Swedish or English of max 1,000 words, which contains a brief presentation of yourself and your qualifications, as well as a brief explanation of why you are interested in the third cycle programme in Service Studies at Lund University, a brief outline of a research proposal in Swedish or English of max 2,000 words including references, containing a description of a research problem and research field, possible research questions and method/s, a CV in Swedish or English that demonstrates your qualifications for the third cycle programme in Service Studies, a degree and grade certificates in Swedish or English, degree projects in Swedish or English at the Bachelor's level and corresponding to at least 15 credits at the Master's level in service Studies or another discipline deemed equivalent, name and contact information of two personal references, other documentation of relevance to the position.
