About the opportunity

The Faculty of Medicine and Health is the largest faculty in the University, and contains seven academic schools: Sydney Medical School, Sydney Dental School, Sydney School of Health Sciences (from Jan 2020), School of Medical Sciences, Sydney Nursing School, Sydney Pharmacy School and Sydney School of Public Health. Sydney Medical School includes ten clinical schools comprising seven metropolitan and three rural clinical schools on key campuses at Broken Hill, Dubbo & Orange and in the Northern Rivers. Each clinical school is a centre of clinical education and research, multi-professional and multi-disciplinary. Clinical schools have strong collaborative relationships with the health services within which they are located.

We are seeking to appoint a distinguished academic as Head of Clinical School, Concord Clinical School. The Concord Clinical School is located in the Medical Education Centre on the campus of Concord Repatriation General Hospital. The school is responsible for the clinical education of approximately 200-230 medical students across all four years of the postgraduate medical program (MD program) of the Sydney Medical School (SMS). From 2020, the school will be involved as part of the SMS in a four year transition into a new medical curriculum. The school also provides support to approximately 60-70 higher degree by research students during their candidature. The school currently has about 17 FTE academic staff, 11.9 FTE professional staff and 148 clinical and other affiliates.

Concord Repatriation General Hospital is located within the Sydney Local Health District (SLHD), and it is expected that SLHD will provide the successful candidate with opportunities and facilities for clinical work at Concord Repatriation General Hospital.

The Head of the Clinical School is a senior management position within Sydney Medical School, and the successful candidate is expected to have experience in staff and financial management. The Head’s role incorporates leadership of medical education in the clinical school, research education, and community engagement. The Head will also contribute to the Faculty’s strategic planning for research. The successful candidate will mentor staff through the University’s Academic Planning and Development (AP&D) process, WHS and overall management of the school, inclusive of financial management and accountability. These responsibilities require alignment of the Clinical School’s activities with the objectives of Sydney Medical School, the Faculty of Medicine and Health, and the University as well as with those of the SLHD, the hospital and any other partner health care organisations. The Head of the Clinical School reports to the Head of School and Dean of Sydney Medical School. The Head may be offered a clinical appointment in one of the following specialty areas: geriatrics, anaesthesia, oncology, palliative care, cardiology, emergency medicine, endocrinology, gastroenterology, haematology, immunology, intensive care, infectious diseases, neurology, nuclear medicine, renal medicine, thoracic medicine and rheumatology.

The successful applicant must have a wide network of established relationships with key academic, industry and professional institutions, partners and stakeholders, that can be leveraged to enhance the standing of the School, Faculty and University.

Term and remuneration

The initial appointment will be for 5 years with the opportunity for renewal subject to assessment of performance. The successful candidate will be offered an attractive remuneration package.
