We are now looking for the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Oulu 

DEKAANIA for a four-year period beginning on 1 January 2026.

In the Faculty of Natural History, we conduct internationally high-quality and effective basic research, which requires long-termism, dynamism and extensive cooperation networks. Our training and cooperation with different disciplines are based on high-quality research.

Our research focuses on:

    Population and community ecology and biodiversity genetics
    Global and regional change and people in a changing environment
    Solar and Earth's near space, space weather and climate change
    galaxies and high-energy astrophysics
    Quantum materials, calculation and technologies
    Green Transition molecular material physics, characterization and imaging
    Bayesian Data Analysis and Mathematical Analysis
    Computational and AI-based Modeling.

Work tasks

As a dean, you will lead faculty activities and be responsible for financial, efficient and effective management of faculty tasks. You are responsible for implementing the University’s strategy, personnel planning and budgeting at the Faculty of Science, as well as the Faculty’s quality management. You will act as the chairman of the Faculty Board and appoint the Faculty Education Committee to support the quality and development of education. You decide on matters concerning faculty that are not assigned or assigned to another institution.

What are we looking for?

According to the University of Oulu’s Code of Conduct, the Dean must be a doctoral candidate with training, professional skills and leadership skills required to carry out their duties.

We require you

    evidence of successful scientific activities, which in practice means proven qualifications of a professor
    the ability to utilise the faculty’s strengths in research, education and social interaction
    the ability to develop the activities of the Faculty and to ensure the maintenance and promotion of staff well-being
    strong cooperation skills and the ability to promote the interests of the entire university
    strong and versatile management experience and inspiring management approach
    A fluent Finnish and English language skill.

Salvation

According to the management rule, the term of the mission is 4 years and starts on 1 January 2026.

The position ranks at the demanding level of teaching and research staff of the university's salary system at 8-10. In addition, a salary component based on personal performance, which is no more than 50% of the part of the work-specific salary component, as well as administrative assignment fee, are paid. Salary in a similar position is typically between EUR 8 000 and EUR 1 000 per month. A probationary period of 6 months applies to the mission.
