Why The Role Matters:

The Centre for the Future of the Legal Profession will be dedicated to investigating the most pressing concerns about the legal profession’s future (key themes included are Ethics and Regulation, and AI and Access to Justice).

The Deputy Director will work with the Director (Michael Legg) to provide leadership for the Centre including through strategic planning, annual planning and budget forecasting.

The Deputy Director will play a key role in assessing legal education and training and will focus on transforming existing resources to ensure that the University produces graduates and practitioners that have the strategic, technical and entrepreneurial skills needed to succeed in legal environment. The Deputy Director will also work with the Director and fellow Centre researchers to support their research and related outreach activities.

Accountabilities:

  • Work with the Director to develop and implement the strategic plan for the Centre consistent with the goals of University and faculty strategies.
  • Continuing to grow a significant national and international research profile for the UNSW CFLP as a leader in research at the intersection of legal leadership, discrimination, workplace culture and others, demonstrated through high-impact publications, receipt of external funding and competitive grant schemes success.
  • Producing high-quality and high-value academic outputs, including success in gaining competitive grants, publication of peer-reviewed papers, and supervision of students (including Honours students and Centre interns).
  • Translating high-quality research into accessible outputs for Centre courses, policymakers, the media, civil society organisations and the general public.
  • Supporting and mentoring Centre members (including HDRs) in their research, including in the contexts of competitive grants; promoting the research and achievements of Centre members.
  • Representing the Centre and building strong engagement and collaboration between individuals, groups and Centres from across UNSW faculties, and with external partners and stakeholders to ensure effective collaboration on Centre courses and projects.



Skills and Experience:

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in Law.
  • A distinguished record of scholarship and research leadership in a related field, evidenced by qualifications or equivalent experience, an outstanding track record of publications in international recognised, peer reviewed journals and conferences, and demonstrated success in attracting diversified research funding.
  • Demonstrated experience providing effective leadership of collaborative and innovative research teams.
  • Demonstrated commitment to strong collegial leadership and a capacity to work with partners and stakeholders within and external to the Centre.
  • Ability to engage at a senior level with government, industry and community groups to develop long term collaborative research partnerships and translate research into tangible social benefits including policy impacts.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning design using a range of pedagogical approaches, development and delivery of courses and programs, at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
