Description

The Undergraduate Program in Public Affairs seeks applications for temporary, part-time (non-Senate) lecturer positions during the 2020-2021 academic year. Specifically, we are seeking a lecturer to teach:

PUB AFF 187A-C. Experiential Learning Capstone (Fall, Winter, Spring quarters)

The lecturer will teach the required three-quarter Public Affairs capstone course which provides the structure through which students integrate and expand their academic and professional learning during their final year in the Public Affairs major and produce a capstone project. Students apply concepts and methods learned in prior courses to a real-world internship experience; refine their understanding of these concepts and methods based on their internship experience; gain new knowledge about specific topics related to their internship; and develop new skills needed to complete a capstone project.

During fall quarter, PUB AFF 187A will focus on connecting each student’s internship experience with concepts and methods learned in prior coursework and developing ideas for their capstone project in collaboration with their internship organization. In winter quarter, PUB AFF 187B will focus on guiding students with developing a work plan for completing their capstone project and conducting the research, analysis, and development needed for the project. Students complete a rough draft of their project by the end of winter quarter. During spring quarter, PUB AFF 187C focuses on project revision and completion, developing a presentation about the project that can be shared with their internship organization, and completing a relevant written product.

Every quarter, students intern weekly at an organization. In addition, they meet weekly for this course. Depending on the week, the scheduled course time may include lectures, discussion sections led by workgroup leaders (professor and the TAs), meetings among students on the same capstone team, meetings among working groups of students whose internships and/or projects share common characteristics, and student presentations.

Responsibilities include developing the syllabus, course, and assignments; lecturing; holding discussion sections; working with students to help them expand their knowledge and skills in areas related to their specific internship experience; working with students to help them develop and refine their capstone project for their specific internship site; providing specific, detailed, and useful feedback on students’ assignments, drafts, presentations, intermediate products, and final products; holding regularly scheduled office hours; being responsive and helpful to students; grading assignments, presentations, and papers/reports/products; managing and collaborating with teaching assistants; coordinating opportunities for students to share their capstone projects.

We seek candidates with a strong commitment to excellence in teaching; experience conducting applied research and/or consulting in field or organizational settings; experience producing presentations, reports, and other materials/products for non-academic audiences; and training in qualitative, quantitative, and evaluation research methods. Experience working in or with government or non-profit organizations preferred. A Ph.D. in Public Policy, Sociology, Political Science, Economics, Developmental Psychology, Social Welfare, or a related field is preferred.
