About the Role 

The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures, within the School of Languages, Linguistics and Film, is looking to appoint a suitably qualified Lecturer specialising in Chinese Studies. Applicants with an attested research and teaching background in Chinese Studies (details below) would especially be welcomed. 

Duties will include research and publication, convening and teaching undergraduate modules, contributing to MA provision as appropriate, (co)-supervising PhD students, and undertaking administrative roles as required within the Department. The successful candidate will be able to develop new modules, and adapt existing ones, in line with their specific research strengths. Evidence of high-quality research and publications in renowned journals is also expected. Applications are invited from specialists with a research background in one or more of the following areas:

  • modern Chinese literature and culture, including the Republican, Socialist, and/or contemporary periods,
  • the late-imperial (Ming-Qing) periods,
  • Translation studies
  • interdisciplinary (text, film, art, stage) or trans-historical work. 

You will be expected to teach on the following during your first year of appointment: Chinese Language and Culture 1 (2 hours p/w, language module), Culture and Language (1 hour p/w, non-language, content module). During this year you will be expected to design non-language, ‘content’ modules for a Chinese Joint Honours track within the BA Modern Languages programme, starting September 2022.

About You 

You will hold a PhD in Chinese Studies or a related subject, or a relevant professional qualification or equivalent professional experience, and a native or near-native command of Mandarin, together with the ability to deliver teaching and assessment at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The ability to work constructively and flexibly with colleagues, and good organisational and communicative skills, are also essential.

The post is full-time and permanent, expecting to start 1 September 2021. Starting salary is Grade 5, ranging £42,433 - £44,807 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
