Role Description


The Department of Social Policy & Social Work at the University of York wishes to recruit an outstanding candidate to a Lectureship in Global Social Policy & International Development. You will bring academic and practice expertise around global social policy and international development that will complement existing strengths in the Department. You will contribute expertise in issues such as social and political issues in development, governance in public and non-profit contexts, and leading and influencing change in development contexts.


The Department of Social Policy & Social Work at York was created in 1966 and has established itself as one the leading departments in the field. In the 2014 REF, the Department placed in joint 1st for impact and 3rd overall in the UK, with 54% of its work rated as ‘world leading’. It was ranked 9th in the world for Social Policy in the 2019 QS World University Subject rankings.


In this role, you will design, develop and deliver teaching across a wide range of modules and/or within a particular programme with a primary focus on our online public management programmes. You will also develop research objectives, projects and proposals and carry out individual or collaborative research projects; lead on and/or contribute to the production, writing up, and dissemination of research outputs and research outcomes; and undertake a range of administrative and managerial responsibilities.


You will have a PhD or equivalent experience. You should also hold an appropriate academic professional and teaching qualification or a willingness to complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice. You will be a team player who works collaboratively, flexibly and reliably, and will work alongside an experienced and supportive team of colleagues.


This is a full time post offered on an open contract basis from 1 January 2020, with a salary in range £39,609-£48,676. 


Candidates invited to interview will be asked to take part in a one-week a-synchronous online tutoring exercise, which will take place during 15 – 19 July.
