Salary Range

  • Level B: $114,824 – $136,048 + 17% superannuation

  • Level C: $140,293 – $161,518 + 17% superannuation


About This Opportunity

In collaboration with the Centre for Western Civilisation, the School of Communication and Arts at the University of Queensland seeks to appoint an exceptional scholar as Lecturer (Level B) or Senior Lecturer (Level C) in Art History.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to a vibrant, interdisciplinary program focused on the foundational texts, ideas, art, and music that have shaped Western thought. The Centre for Western Civilisation aims to explore and critically evaluate the significance of the “great books” tradition and its continuing relevance.

The appointee will deliver and coordinate art-historical content across the program, including a survey course on the history of Western art, and collaborate with colleagues to integrate art-historical perspectives across related courses.


Key Responsibilities

Teaching

  • Develop, coordinate, and deliver courses in art history.

  • Engage in curriculum design and innovation.

  • Assess students, provide academic advising, and uphold UQ teaching standards.

Research

  • Establish and pursue a research program aligned with art and architectural history.

  • Publish in leading scholarly venues.

  • Seek and manage external research funding and foster collaborative research.

Supervision and Researcher Development

  • Supervise Honours and Higher Degree Research students.

  • Mentor early-career researchers and students.

  • Foster a supportive and high-performing academic environment.

Citizenship and Service

  • Engage in internal service and leadership roles.

  • Contribute to the School, Faculty, and University communities.

  • Promote UQ’s values and enhance its national and international profile.


About You

Applicants must hold a PhD in Art History or a closely related field and demonstrate a specialisation in art and architecture prior to the 20th century.

At Level B (Lecturer), candidates will demonstrate:

  • A growing profile in high-quality university teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

  • Ability to coordinate courses and develop curriculum materials.

  • Experience supervising Honours and HDR students.

  • Evidence of scholarly publication and a developing research agenda.

  • Some experience seeking or supporting external research funding.

  • A developing record of internal service and professional engagement.

At Level C (Senior Lecturer), candidates will demonstrate:

  • An established record of teaching excellence and leadership in course and curriculum design.

  • Significant experience supervising Honours and HDR students to completion.

  • A sustained record of high-quality research and publication.

  • Evidence of securing and managing external research funding.

  • A strong record of internal and professional service contributions.
