Description

The College at the University of Chicago is accepting applications for a part-time lecturer to teach the Mellon Summer Research Training Program's summer course, "Engaged Scholarship: Foundations for Critical & Social Theory and Practice." One may apply as a single instructor or propose to teach jointly with another.

Responsibilities would include teaching a nine-week course that meets Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 3:00–4:30 PM, June 16 to August 14, 2026. The terms and conditions of employment for this position are covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the University and Service Employees International Union. The per-course salary for academic year 2026–27 will be at least $9,193. This position is not benefits-eligible.


Responsibilities

Responsibilities would include:

  • Lecturing twice a week.

  • Leading small group discussions.

  • Holding office hours.

  • Maintaining a course Canvas site.

  • Managing online discussion posts.

  • Organizing and directing students in working in small groups to deliver presentations to the class.

  • Guiding students in developing a short paper about the critical theory they will deploy in their future research projects.


Qualifications

Applicants must hold Ph.D. candidacy status or a Ph.D. degree in history or a qualitative social science field and demonstrate a well-developed interest in contemporary theories of race, gender, and class. Applicants must also possess at least one year of college-level teaching experience. Applicants are encouraged to demonstrate how they have engaged in the values inspiring the Mellon Foundation's work. Familiarity with the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship and programs like it is a plus.

Applicants should submit a letter of interest, a current C.V., a teaching statement, a writing sample demonstrating research interests and/or methods, a list of two references whom we can contact, and a proposed syllabus for the course.
