Lecturer in Law
University of Essex - Essex Law School
United Kingdom

This is an exciting time to join Essex Law School, as Essex celebrates winning the 2018 ‘University of the Year’ award and with the announcement of an ambitious staff expansion plan.

Ranked 51st in the Law subject section in the 2019 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, at Essex Law School we take excellence in research and excellence in education equally seriously. We have a global reputation for our research and host several large-scale, interdisciplinary research projects, including on big data, human rights and administrative justice.

We have a number of Lecturer appointments to make to expand our teaching team to help deliver our core curriculum. We especially welcome applicants with teaching experience in Land Law, Equity & Trusts, Tort Law and Contract Law, although other areas will also be considered. An ability to also contribute to teaching Medical Law or French private law would be particularly advantageous.

Duties of the Role

You will design, plan and deliver learning, engage effectively in substantive teaching and learning support roles in the Department, select appropriate methods of assessment and feed back to learners, supervise student projects, and undertake leadership duties related to education.

In addition, you will enhance the scholarly reputation of the Department and contribute to expertise and knowledge to departmental and/or institutional initiatives.

A full list of key responsibilities and main duties (Education, Research and Leadership and Citizenship) can be found within the job pack.

Skills and Qualifications required

The successful candidates will hold a relevant doctoral level degree or be close to completion or have equivalent professional experience or practice, have an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in Law or equivalent professional experience, and fellowship of the Higher Education Academy or the ability to gain professional recognition at this or a higher level if appropriate.

You will have teaching experience in at least one core LLB undergraduate module, preferably in a UK legal system, and experience of working independently in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, or demonstrable potential to engage in teaching and learning support in engaging and innovative ways.

Candidates must also demonstrate experience of contributing to designing and planning learning activities, developing effective learning environments (face to face and/or virtual) and approaches to student support and guidance and a clear understanding of how students learn both generally and within their subject/disciplinary area(s) and the ability to apply this understanding to their own practice.

These are fixed-term, full-time posts until 30 June 2020 on ASE (teaching) contracts and the expected start date is 1 October 2019 or as close to this thereafter.

At the University of Essex internationalism is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally-oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries and a university where you can find the world in one place.
