# Job description

We are seeking to recruit a scholar in Sociology, Social Policy or a closely allied field, with a substantial interest and expertise in quantitative research methods. The successful candidate will also have a strong interest in social justice and applied social science. They will contribute to programme leadership, module coordination and teaching on our BA Social Sciences and Master’s programmes, undertake doctoral supervision and conduct high quality research.  

 

The post holder will be a member of the friendly and vibrant Centre for Public Policy Research within the School of Education, Communication and Society in the Faculty of Social Science and Public Policy. They will have a track record of producing high quality research publications, proven teaching ability in quantitative methods, and an interest in enquiry-based, participatory and/or critical pedagogies.  

 

We welcome applications from candidates with interests including, but not limited to, critical perspectives on big data and data analytics, and/or quantitative approaches to critical policy analysis, decolonial scholarship, and/or social justice-oriented research more generally.

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract. 

This is a full-time post.# Key responsibilities

The post holder will be expected to contribute to the academic life and culture of the Centre for Public Policy Research (CPPR) and the wider School, including by:  

- Contributing to programme leadership, curriculum development, teaching and module coordination on the BA Social Sciences and other programmes as required 
- Acting as Personal Tutor to students and supervising student dissertations 
- Enhancing the research profile of CPPR through a portfolio of high quality publications, funded research and knowledge exchange 
- Supporting colleagues undertaking and developing mixed methods research bids 
- Recruiting and supervising MPhil/PhD students in their specialist research area 
- Promoting and marketing the work of the School 
- Contributing to the smooth running of the School by taking on organisational responsibilities as directed by the Head of School

# Skills, knowledge, and experience 

**Essential criteria**  

1.      A PhD in a relevant area 

2.      Strong communication skills, with excellent written and spoken English  

3.      Strong organisational and teamworking skills and a commitment to inclusive and democratic ways of working 

4.      Expertise in quantitative research methods in the context of Sociology, Social Policy or a closely allied field, with a strong interest in social justice and applied social science, an aptitude for communication across disciplines, and research and teaching interests that complement those of existing group members  

5.      Ability and willingness to contribute to teaching, programme administration and leadership and the coordination of modules on the BA Social Sciences, including in areas beyond the candidate’s immediate specialism, and on other programmes as required 

6.      Proven teaching ability (including in quantitative methods) and an interest in and expertise relevant to enquiry-based, participatory and/or critical pedagogies  

7.      A track record of high quality research publications
