• A detailed curriculum vitae and cover letter (please note that the first three (3) referees on your CV will be contacted with regard to reference checking);

• Certified copies (not older than 3 months) of qualifications (please provide the SAQA accreditation in the case of foreign qualifications);
• A certified copy (not older than 3 months) of your identity document (ID);
• Proof of registration with a Professional Body (if applicable);
• A copy of your driver’s license (if applicable).

Duties and responsibilities: 

• Coordinate and lecture at first-, second- and third-year level with regard to the history of South Africa, Africa and the rest of the world.
• Coordinate and lecture at Honour’s and Masters Level.
• Provide postgraduate supervision to Honour’s, Masters and/ or Doctoral students.
• Conduct research as required.
• Take responsibility for administrative and related work, if and when necessary.
• Serve on faculty and campus committees, if and when necessary.

Inherent requirements: 

• Master’s degree on NQF level 9 in History.
• Proven experience in the delivery of presentations at conferences or equivalent activities.
• Provide evidence of manuscripts produced that have the potential to be converted or submitted for publication, ideally in an accredited journal.
• A good academic record.   

Senior Lecturer:
• PhD on NQF level 10 in History.  
• Proven experience in the supervision of graduated Masters students.
• Proven experience in the presentation of papers at national scholarly conferences.
• Proven national recognition for specialist expertise and research in a specific area of scholarship.
• An NRF rating or demonstrate potential for obtaining an NRF rating within reasonable time.
• A proven research record of relevant publications in national and international accredited journals.
• Proven experience of service as an active member of a national or international scholarly society or committee or agency concerned with research at higher education levels. 

Required competencies: 

• Business Acumen
  o Ability to teach history at tertiary level.
  o Knowledge of- and ability to use Learning Management Systems (LMS) for teaching and assessment.
  o Excellent skilled use of Microsoft Office software (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and related programmes).
• Strategic Thinking
  o Good organising and administrative skills.
  o Good research skills and writing abilities.
• Leading
  o Ability to adapt to specific needs of students at the University of the Free State.
• Building Coalitions
  o Sound interpersonal, communication (verbal and written) and strategic skills.
  o Ability to function with ease in the University’s richly diverse working environment.


• Doctoral degree in History or willingness to enrol for a doctoral degree in History at the first available opportunity. 
• Proven research record of relevant publications in national accredited journals.
• Experience in securing funding for research projects.
• Experience with regard to academic journal editorial board work.

Senior Lecturer:
• Experience in securing funding for research projects.
• Experience relating to academic journal editorial board work.

Assumption of duties: 

As soon as possible.
