We are seeking an exceptional candidate to enhance the excellence in teaching and research in Environmental Science within the School of Social Sciences.  The successful candidate will play a key role in developing cross-disciplinary collaborations within Geography & Environmental Science and with other disciplines in the social sciences and wider university.   The candidate would participate in the design of modules that focus on ecology in a wider environmental context, and would be expected to take an active role in the teaching of our successful BSc (Hons) programmes as well as support our taught postgraduate courses. In addition to teaching and administrative duties (including student recruitment) the successful candidate should have a clearly articulated research strategy and will undertake excellent research with demonstrable impact.  Pursuit of external grant funding and regularly publishing research papers are essential.  It would be desirable to hear from candidates with research excellence in an international context.

 

Person Specification

 

Essential:

- PhD or equivalent experience in Environmental Science, Physical Geography or a related field;

- Research and teaching experience relating to ecology and ecosystem science, e.g.  eco-hydrology, carbon and nutrient cycling,  biogeography, zoology, botany, ecosystem services;

- Expereince of teaching at University (or equivalent level);

- A rising research profile;

- Clear evidence of research objectives and the ability to conduct individual or collaborative research projects and to generate external funding;

- Clear evidence of learning and teaching competence;

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;

- Evidence of ability and willingness to work collaboratively with others;

- Ability to prioritise and balance competing demands;

- Contribute to the design, development and delivery of teaching programmes at various levels;

- Experience of marking, assessing coursework and examinations and providing feedback to students;

- Ability to engage and travel in occasional overseas recruitment activities.

 

Desirable:

- Experience in University learning and teaching practice;

- Experience of curriculum development;

- Experience of organising and conducting undergraduate field research and related teaching activity;

- Experience of supervision of undergraduate/taught and research postgraduate student projects;

- Experience of applying knowledge in practice, e.g. with consultancy or third-sector organisations;

- Experience of successful international student recruitment;

- Experience in geospatial applications of ecosystem science;

- Experience of supervision of research students.
