We have an exciting opportunity tailored just for you – we're on the lookout for an Operational Manager to helm the Law & Economics (L&E) section and take charge as the Coordinator for our esteemed research hub, the Amsterdam Center for Law & Economics (ACLE).


As our Operational Manager, your role is both broad and central within the L&E section. You will serve as the linchpin in the daily operations of our research and educational endeavors. Your focus will be on personnel and financial management, translating policy into actionable strategies, and ensuring the utmost efficiency in our business operations. You will be the go-to contact for your department colleagues, providing them with valuable advice and support while actively assisting our Section Head.


In your capacity as the Coordinator of the ACLE, you will play a crucial role in supporting our Director, who is currently our L&E Section Head, and future co-directors in steering the Centre. You will keep a watchful eye on various budgets in close collaboration with the Section Head and faculty offices. Ensuring that the Section's hiring processes run smoothly and that costs and income are meticulously allocated falls within your purview. Additionally, when external funding is involved, you will be the point of contact for project control.

So, what exactly will you be doing?


Managing the Law and Economics Section:

  • Providing indispensable support and counsel to the Section Head within the framework of the UvA and the Faculty of Law, encompassing finances, ICT, and personnel matters.
  • Orchestrating and coordinating the Faculty's planning and control cycle, including budgeting, deployment planning, and management reports.
  • Diligently overseeing financial budgets in close collaboration with financial controllers.
  • Streamlining the business processes of our departments while bridging the gap with the faculty office.
  • Actively participating in executive consultations.


Coordinating the ACLE Research Centre:

  • Facilitating seamless cooperation among academic staff from the Faculty of Law (FdR) and the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), with the ambition of establishing the ACLE as a world-leading hub for law & economics research.
  • Formulating and analyzing budgets to provide insightful recommendations to the Director regarding the utilization of research funds.
  • Maintaining records of ACLE PhD candidates, Postdocs, and visiting researchers during and after their tenures.
  • Collaborating closely with the ACLE program manager on practical matters, such as information collection, proposal management, feedback gathering from research members, managing mailing lists, overseeing website design and content, and establishing and implementing a social media policy.
  • Offering guidance and support to ACLE members in the organization of seminars, conference arrangements, and the collection and selection of materials for our newsletter.
  • Collaborating with ACLE academic staff on the preparation of reports, plans, and concise handouts aimed at securing and expanding funding.
  • Assisting the Director in overall ACLE governance and global branding efforts.

  • A minimum of a completed Higher Education (HBO) qualification.

Our offer


We offer a temporary employment contract of 22,8 hours per week (0,6 FTE) for one year, with the prospect of an employment contract for an indefinite period. The preferred starting date is as soon as possible.


The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week and dependent on relevant experience, ranges between € 3,226 to € 5,090 (scale 10) . This does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance the UvA offers.

The Law & Economics Section of the law school is the core of the ACLE. The Section is home to leading senior scholars and young talents in law and economics. The Section is the driving force of the ACLE, participates in several interfaculty research projects, and is involved in several interdisciplinary educational programmes, such as the Master in Law and Finance (MLF), the Amsterdam University College (AUC), and the Bachelor Politics, Psychology, Law and Economics (PPLE).
