PhD Position in Access-To-Medicines Research

The Faculty of Business and Economics at KU Leuven is looking for a full-time PhD Candidate for its Access-To-Medicines Research Centre within the Janssens Pharmaceutica Research Chair. The research will be co-promoted by Prof. Nico Vandaele and Dr. Catherine Decouttere. The Access-To-Medicines Research Centre is involved in high-level, transdisciplinary research on health system design, health systems modeling (system dynamics, discrete event and agent based) and health supply chain management. Our projects build on active field work and aim for real-life impact. This project is a collaboration between the Access-To-Medicines Research Centre and major global players in the pandemic preparedness ecosystem: governments, international organizations and private companies. The focus will particularly be on sustainable health design research questions in Low and Middle Income Countries.

Project

Your PhD research concerns applying a systems approach to pandemic preparedness, and the role of  immunization. Learnings from the  Covid-19 pandemic will be brought into future perspectives.  
You will collaborate with other research groups and industrial experts. Your research will be based both on qualitative and quantitative methods including stakeholder engagement activities, conceptual systems modeling, and simulation modeling.
You are also expected to be internationally mobile from time to time, for instance for field works and workshops.
You will enroll in the Doctoral School of the Faculty of Business and Economics. The candidate can be asked to give guidance to students (e.g. by supervising their master's thesis in the area) and to supervise exams. 
You will find a dynamic and pleasant working environment, in a growing trans/multi-disciplinary team that is actively involved in fundamental scientific research combined with a substantial sense of relevance guaranteed by the field work experience of the ATM team. 

Profile

We are looking for a highly motivated and ambitious PhD student with an excellent academic record, writing skills, work ethics and strong proven interest in systems thinking and global health. 
A Master’s degree in Business Engineering, System Dynamics, Biomedical Science, Medical Science, Bio-engineering, Engineering or related field is required.
An average degree of distinction or higher during preliminary studies is required as well as an appropriate command of written and spoken English. Willingness to also apply for personal funding through a fellowship is a prerequisite.
Programming skills in Java or Python or knowledge of a Systems Modelling environment (e.g. Anylogic) or Geographic Information System, is an asset.

Offer

We offer an employment as full-time doctoral scholar as from now for 1 year, renewable till max. 4 years after positive evaluation. 
You will be embedded in an international, enthusiastic and dynamic team with ample expertise in supply chain management, health systems design and modeling to address key questions related to the outlined work.
