PhD position, Medical sociology - 2019BAPFSWEF131

The Faculty of Social Sciences is seeking to fill a 4-year full-time (100%) vacancy in the Centre for Population, Family & Health for a predoctoral researcher in the area of medical sociology.

Doctoral grant, the impact of PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis or prevention through anti-HIV medications) on the HIV-epidemic and the sexual culture among men who have sex with men.

PROMISE is a large, 4-year interdisciplinary research project which aims to optimize the impact of PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) on the HIV epidemic in Belgium. The project is a collaboration between the International HIV/AIDS Policy Unit of the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) and the Centre for Population, Family & Health of the University of Antwerp.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, is a novel HIV prevention approach for people who do not have HIV but who are at substantial risk of getting it to prevent HIV infection by taking a pill. The potential impact of this approach on (1) the HIV-epidemic and (2) the sexual culture among high risk groups is massive. As a response, the Centre for Population, Family & Health started – in close collaboration with ITM – a research project on the impact of PrEP. The CPFH focus is on men who have sex with men – a group which has a higher-than-average risk of contracting HIV and are thus often eligible for PrEP.

PROMISE is an FWO-SBO project. The funding as Strategic Basic Research requires besides academic output also strong societal impact. The research team thus needs to continuously interact with the stakeholders in the field during this research project as we aim to have maximal impact on the public health aspect under study.
