The Opportunity

The Faculty of Law, Monash University, together with the Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science, Swinburne University of Technology, has received Australian Research Council Funding for a project entitled ‘Understanding and responding to online child sexual exploitation offenders.’ One PhD scholarship for a domestic candidate is available to examine sentencing trends and practices in relation to online child sexual exploitation offences. The scholarship is available for 3 years and 3 months, under the supervision of Professor Jonathan Clough. In addition to legal research, the candidate will also have the opportunity to undertake qualitative and quantitative research, drawing upon datasets obtained as part of the broader project.

Candidate Requirements

Successful applicants will have excellent academic track record in law or another discipline relevant to the proposed research project. Experience in psychological research, quantitative research methods and/or qualitative research methods is desirable but not essential.

Applicants will be considered if they fulfil the criteria for PhD admission at Monash University. Monash University admission requirements include English-language proficiency skills. Details of eligibility requirements to undertake a PhD in the Faculty of Law are available here.

Successful applicants will be expected to enrol before October 31st 2020. However, there may be some flexibility as to the date of commencement. Scholarship holders must be enrolled full-time and on campus.

Please note: applicants who already hold a PhD will not be considered.

Submission of an Expression of Interest

Applicants must submit an expression of interest in accordance with the guidelines set out here and below. The expression of interest should comprise:

  • A cover letter that includes a statement of the applicant’s suitability in relation to the research topic;
  • A curriculum vitae, including a list of any published works, conference presentations and relevant work experience;
  • Academic transcripts;
  • Contact details of two academic referees.
