Postdoctoral Fellow in Artificial Intelligence and Law Stockholm

Apply

at the Department of Law. Closing date: 31 May 2021.

The Department of Law is one of the largest departments at Stockholm University with approximately 200 employees and 6,500 students per academic year. More than one hundred teachers are engaged full time in teaching as well as carrying out the research on which the education is based. The Department employs approximately 30 professors and other researchers within different legal disciplines. As a postdoctoral fellow at Juridicum, you will be part of a dynamic environment conducting high prestige research with a strong international character. You will also be affiliated with the Swedish Law and Informatics Research Institute (IRI).

The position as postdoctoral fellow is part of the initiative The Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program -Humanities and Society.

Research Area

The research in the field of AI and Law includes both methodological issues in connection with system design and regulatory aspects.

The basic approach is based on the fact that information and communication technology must be developed and used in accordance with legal and ethical principles. This is especially true of AI-based applications comprising self-learning systems and dynamic decision-making algorithms that cannot be explained by humans.

Systems that have the ability to change autonomously cannot be controlled exclusively by traditional legal solutions. The digital information society thus provides new prerequisites for the application of traditional legal principles. This means, among other things, that legal control mechanisms need to be interpreted proactively, and be modified and incorporated early on in various technical solutions.

All in all, the field of AI and Law is to a large extent unexplored and in need of both extensive and in-depth studies.

Main responsibilities

The position is mainly focused on IT Law research in the interdisciplinary field of "AI and Law". The overall purpose is to contribute to new knowledge about how the use of AI affects both the interpretation and application of legislation in digital environments, and the conditions required for the development of legally compliant AI.

The postdoctoral fellow is expected to collaborate across departmental and faculty boundaries, for example together with researchers at the Department of Computer and Systems Science (DSV) and the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH).

Teaching and administration corresponding to 20 % of the annual working hours are included in the employment.

Qualification requirements

Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria

In the first instance, a person who has completed a Swedish doctoral degree in Law with a focus on IT Law and AI or has a foreign degree that is deemed to correspond to this or has achieved equivalent scientific competence is sought, no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special circumstances, the doctoral degree may have been completed earlier. Such reasons are leave due to illness, parental leave, clinical service, elected positions within trade unions or other similar circumstances.

During the appointment, special emphasis is placed on scientific skill. The assessment basis for scientific proficiency consists of the applicant's previous research and the applicant's research plan of a maximum of 10,000 characters (including spaces). The research plan must provide evidence of scientific proficiency and contain both comprehensive IT Law issues as well as methodological issues associated with the digitalisation of society.

The scientific skill must also have been demonstrated through high-level activities in the form of own scientific activities and other research-related activities such as received research grants, assignments as an expert, opponent or grade committee member, participation in international research projects, assignments for journals, prizes received, research administration and other research relevant experiences. The assessment takes into account both the ability to cooperate and the ability and suitability in general that is needed to perform the tasks well.

Further qualifications are competence to work in an interdisciplinary research group, knowledge of information and communication technology (including programming), international contacts, and the ability to communicate research results to decision-makers and the general public.

Knowledge of either Swedish or English at a very high level is a requirement for employment. Anyone who masters Swedish at a very high level must also master English at a high level.

Completed higher education pedagogical education of at least 15 credits is meritorious.

In the overall assessment, the applicant's development potential and social ability in general will also be taken into account.

Terms of employment

The position involves full-time employment for a maximum of two years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date 1st of September, 2021 or as per agreement.
