Job assignments

The Postdoctoral research fellow is primarily expected to conduct research with a focus on the main questions of the research project "Endangered Democracies: Sequences of Autocratization” (EDSA), which is a new project within the V-Dem umbrella, in collaboration with other scholars at the V-Dem Institute. You can download the project description from

The successful candidate is expected to conduct research tied to the EDSA research agenda equivalent to at least one-third of FTE. The Postdoctoral research fellow is expected to use V-Dem data in the research – in particular on autocracies, autocratization and failed democratization

One of V-Dem’s strengths is the flexibility and collaborative spirit of everyone at the institute, focusing on reaching the goals of the data collection and research program. This includes a willingness to contribute to coding of data, quality control, data management and/or teaching during peak periods. For this position, the service component is expected to focus on further development and issue solving with regards to the measures of autocracy and autocratization and outreach to policy makers/practitioners. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow may be asked to perform service to the V-Dem Institute up to one-third of FTE.

In total, the postdoctoral research fellow is expected to spend two-thirds of FTE on research and service for the V-Dem Institute and the EDSA project.

The postdoctoral fellow position is open to candidates who have received a PhD in political science or related field. Priority will be given to candidates who have completed their degree no more than three years before the application deadline. Those who graduated earlier may also be given consideration, if there are special reasons.

Applications will be evaluated primarily on research excellence in comparative politics with a particular view towards areas of relevance to the EDSA project. Comparative research at high international level relevant for the study of autocratization, authoritarian regimes, and/or political development, is prioritized in the evaluation of applications. One or more of the following scientific skills are also meritorious:

    A well-developed proposal of high scientific quality, for a research project that falls within and preferably further develops EDSA (see link to program description);

    Advanced time-series, cross-sectional regression techniques, Vector Auto-Regression (VAR), sequencing algorithms, and/or optimal matching methods.

    Demonstrated research expertise on: social polarization, authoritarian durability, the erosion of democracy, politics in MENA region and/or causes and consequences of state repression and political violence.

We will make an overall assessment of the applicants’ qualifications and select one judged to complement the rest of the team in the best way possible for the needs of the program. Personal qualities relevant for the position are of great importance.

Fixed-term employment, two years, full time in residence, start date September 1st 2019 or per agreement.
