Position summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic and driven Post-Doctoral Researcher to play a key role in delivering and analysing the Digital Atlas of Early Irish Carved Stones (DAEICS). The role will be based in the Department of Archaeology, University College Cork. Led by Dr Tomás Ó Carragáin, the project team will include academics at UCC (Dr Griffin Murray, John Sheehan, Dr Pat Meere) and Queens University Belfast (Dr Patrick Gleeson), as well as state bodies, private sector collaborators and community groups.

The project will enhance both the academic understanding and public appreciation of late prehistoric and early medieval carved stone monuments (AD 1–1200) in Ireland, from Late Iron Age ‘idols’ to early medieval cross slabs and high crosses. We will integrate and enrich existing records of carved stones from across the island, allowing researchers to visualise and analyse the most important variables in form, design, resource investment, and chronology for the first time. The utility of the island-wide database will be demonstrated through case studies of three internationally important collections of carved stones centred on Armagh, Clonmacnoise, and Iveragh.
