Postdoctoral Researcher in Social Sciences and Literary Studies
Catholic University of Leuven
Belgium

As part of the research project COLLAB, led by Núria Codina, the University of Leuven is recruiting a full-time, fixed-term Postdoctoral Researcher for 36 months in the areas of Social Sciences and Literary Studies. The position is funded by a European Research Council Starting Grant and is available from 1 September 2023.

Responsibilities

The postdoctoral researcher will study the work of several non-profit organizations across Europe that provide spaces for literary participation of migrants through collaborative writing workshops with amateur authors from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. The research aims to better understand the mission and activities of the selected non-profit organizations; their collaborations with other institutions on different levels; their impact on the cultural field and on migration-related policies and the uses of literature in civil society. The researcher will conduct short research stays in the countries studied to gather new information on the activities of the non-profits and the characteristics of the creative writing workshops offered.

The postdoctoral researcher will undertake innovative research at the intersection of the social sciences and the humanities. Other duties will include the coordination of an interfaculty platform for interdisciplinary approaches to migration and minorities. The researcher will be affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and will work in close collaboration with staff members from the Faculty of Social Sciences at KU Leuven, with Núria Codina and Peter Vermeersch as main academic hosts.

Project

The postdoctoral researcher will be part of the research project “Making Migrant Voices Heard Through Literature: How Collaboration Is Changing the Cultural Field” (COLLAB). This five-year interdisciplinary project examines how collaboration expands the range of institutions involved in the making of a text, redefines notions of authorship and community and impinges on migrants’ agency. COLLAB will consist of four team members from varied disciplines across the humanities and social sciences who will work under the supervision of Núria Codina. The project aims to promote collaboration as a tool for interdisciplinary research and stimulate open debates about possible challenges and best practices on how to conduct collaborative work in academia.
