Position description

The Center for Effective Global Action seeks to hire a recent PhD graduate who applies pioneering and rigorous analysis to policy-relevant topics in economics. This position frees scholars from teaching and administrative responsibilities, allowing them to focus on research. The scholar will have many opportunities for intellectual exchanges with UC Berkeley scholars and faculty. The position offers a direct engagement in new and exciting research opportunities and personal mentorship from faculty and other researchers on the team.
The postdoctoral scholar will gain an expanded network of collaborators and mentors, generating fresh and innovative research that is important for economic policy. The scholar will be part of a dynamic research team and gain experience with all the steps of the research process. The scholar will become an integrated member of the economic and business school communities by actively participating in seminar series in the Economics department and/or School of Business and taking advantage of various internal workshops to present and provide feedback on research at different stages.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

PhD (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a PhD (or equivalent international degree) program

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
    • PhD (or equivalent international degree)
    • No more than 12 months of post-degree research experience
Preferred qualifications
    • Ph.D or equivalent international degree. in economics, finance, and related fields
    • Interest in Applied Microeconomics, Development Economics, Urban Economics, and Crime and Violence
    • Strength in applied micro-econometrics, field experiments, and applied data science (including machine learning and computational methods with unstructured data)
    • Strong programming skills in R/Stata and Spatial analysis Software (e.g., ArcGIS)
    • Strong quantitative skills (coursework in econometrics and statistics)
    • Excellent organizational and data management skills
    • Fluency and excellent communication skills in English
    • Flexible, self-motivating, able to manage multiple tasks efficiently, and work in teams
    • Familiarity with randomized controlled trials
    • Previous experience developing research projects in collaboration with non-academic stakeholders (NGOs, governments, or industry partners)
    • Fluency in Spanish

  • Research Statment - A one page (max 800 words) research statement that includes a brief description of your dissertation research and a more detailed proposal for the project(s) you are interested in pursuing during the fellowship.
  • Writing Sample - One PhD dissertation chapter or article-length writing sample, no more than 25 pages. The writing sample may be published or unpublished.
