Duties and responsibilities
  • High-level internationally recognised research and development activities in the field of empirical sociology (such as family sociology, military sociology), developing and leading research themes of the specialisation and securing the resources necessary for it.
  • Participation in research administrative activities on an international scale.
  • Development, planning, organization of teaching, preparation of study and teaching aids and conducting teaching in the subjects of the methodology of social sciences, sociological research and analysis methods and sub-branches of sociology (incl. family sociology, sociology of education, life-course sociology) at all levels of higher education in both Estonian and English.
  • Ensuring the availability of future academic staff in the field and supervising students’ graduation theses (primarily master’s and doctoral theses).
  • Participation in the work of academic and administrative decision-making bodies.
  • Popularisation of the field and applying expert knowledge for the benefit of the society. Ongoing personal professional development to enhance teaching, supervising and management skills necessary for research and development activities.
Required qualifications
PhD or an equivalent qualification.
Required experience
  • Ability to organise research and development activities of the specialisation, internationally recognised and ongoing active professional research in the field of sociology, the volume of which so far is equivalent to at least three doctoral theses and in the last five years at least in the volume equivalent to that of 1.5 doctoral thesis.
  • Success in applying for research funding, project management and execution capacity.
  • Participation in the work of the international community of the field. 
  • Previous teaching experience at least at the first two levels of higher education, effective supervising of master’s and doctoral students; ability to organise teaching and create study and teaching aids and teach the courses of empirical sociology (methodology, research methods, etc.) at all levels of higher education both in Estonian and English.
  • Experience in team or project management.
Required language skills
Advanced-level proficiency of both Estonian and English. The candidate should either already have Estonian language skills sufficient for research and teaching or demonstrate ability to acquire such skills within three years.
