Technische Universität Berlin - Faculty VI

As part of the federal and state program for the advancement of junior scholars, Technische Universität Berlin, Faculty VI – Planning Building Environment – Institute of Sociology, currently has a vacancy for a

Tenure-Track-Professorship, remuneration group W1, fixed term, to be continued as a lifetime professorship, remuneration group W3,
in “Spatial Sociology”.

This professorship should be seen in the context of Technische Universität Berlin’s goal to recruit and advance junior scholars in the very early stage of their career. The tenure track professorship is initially limited to three years. The position shall be renewed for a further three years conditional upon the postholder’s performance and agreement. After six years, as a rule, a lifelong professorship will be offered conditional upon the fulfillment of the determined evaluation criteria and hiring requirements for a lifelong professorship. Information about the evaluation criteria can be found on Technische Universität Berlin’s website (https://www.planen-bauen-umwelt.tu-berlin.de/menue/einrichtungen/fakultaets_service_center/berufungsverfahren/informationen_fuer_bewerberinnen_und_bewerber/professur_raumsoziologie/tenure_track_kriterien_raumsoziologie/parameter/en/).

Working field:

The successful candidate is required to teach and undertake research into sociology with a focus on spatial sociology and represent the subject in its broadest sense on the level of sociological theories or methods. Active involvement in Collaborative Research Center 1265 “Re-figuration of Spaces” is of particular importance. The successful candidate is expected to pursue research into sociological spatial theory in addition to empirical spatial research.

Within research, emphasis is to be placed on interdisciplinary and intercultural cooperation as well as on communication between science and practice.

It is preferred that applicants have research experience in urban sociology and/or inequality research/social structure analysis. Inequality research is understood to include post-colonial theory and gender research. Should the candidate have not yet pursued a research focus in urban and/or inequality sociology, they are expected to develop such a research focus in the future.

Teaching will focus on the relevant compulsory and compulsory elective modules in the “Sociology and Technology Studies”, and “Urban and Regional Planning” bachelor’s and master’s programs. The position holder is further required to undertake additional teaching duties within the faculty as well to perform duties relating to academic self-administration.

Willingness to participate in interdisciplinary projects addressing spatial issues, particularly in cooperation with the Institute of Urban and Regional Planning at TU Berlin, is expected as is a willingness to work on establishing research links to the University’s main research areas (particularly in engineering disciplines). Given the importance of innovation as a research area within the Institute of Sociology, research interest in this area is also expected. Participation in international committees and research groups is required.

Requirements:

Applicants must fulfill the hiring requirements pursuant to Section 102c Berlin State Higher Education Act in combination with Section 102a Berlin State Higher Education Act.
