The Department of War Studies is seeking one Postdoctoral Research Associate with expertise in digital methods to work with Professor Claudia Aradau on a European Research Council Consolidator Grant SECURITY FLOWS ('Enacting border security in the digital age: Political lives of data forms, flows and frictions'). The project analyses the epistemic, political, practical and ethical implications of the increased production of data and data analytics for border security. It proposes to develop a systematic and innovative analysis of how data is generated in border encounters, how it circulates among actors and how it shapes the knowledge and practices of border security and non-governmental actors, and migrants themselves.


The post holder will support the development of digital methods and approaches in the project. This should include supporting digital methods research in the context of internet studies; digital sociology; information science; computational social science; data studies and associated areas. The post holder will have expertise with in any of the following areas: network analysis; controversy mapping; textual analysis; issue mapping and data visualisation, with the capacity to develop 'hands on' data work. Knowledge in programming languages such as Python or R would be an advantage. The role entails working with the project team to integrate digital and ethnographic methods, as well as collaborations with non-governmental actors and researchers working on related areas.

This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for three years.


This is a full-time post.
