Position Summary

A research associate, post-doctoral researcher, is available at the Kellogg Biological Station (KBS) at Michigan State University under the co-mentorship of Professors Sandy Marquart-Pyatt and Phil Robertson. This position is associated with the USDA’s Long-Term Agroecosystem Research (LTAR) network (https://ltar.ars.usda.gov/). 

The research associate will work on projects related to the environment and agriculture, farmer decision-making, behavior, and adaptive capacity, and social-ecological and agro-ecological systems.  The position will work with the KBS LTAR group at MSU and across the national network of LTAR sites, which encompasses multiple institutions and disciplines.  This position will provide opportunities for cross-disciplinary engagement and the potential for interaction with academic researchers, agricultural producers, and stakeholders.  A working knowledge of agriculture in the US Midwest sufficient to engage in research on topics of interest to the agricultural community is required.  Previous experience working in interdisciplinary teams and with remote academic and non-academic partners is a plus. 

Specific research responsibilities include:

  • Conduct original research aligned with KBS LTAR research objectives as noted above;
  • Lead manuscripts, research reports, and conference presentations; 
  • Contribute to interdisciplinary research teams working in the social, agricultural, and environmental science

Start date, salary, and location: The appointment is for one year with extensions contingent on satisfactory performance and continued funding. Start date is flexible, and as soon as July 2020. Describe your preferred start date and/or constraints in the cover letter. Salary is $50,000 per year; university benefits apply, including health and dental insurance. The position is based at KBS, located in SW Michigan near Kalamazoo, about 60 miles from the main MSU campus in East Lansing. More information about KBS can be found at kbs.msu.edu.

Required Degree

Doctorate -Environmental Social Science

Minimum Requirements

Required qualifications include:

  • PhD in a relevant field related to environmental social science (e.g. sociology, geography), natural resources, ecology, or agriculture;

Desired Qualifications

  • Excellent data management, writing, and communication skills;
  • Interest in time-series and longitudinal data across scientific fields and experience with various data sharing platforms and software for data analysis.
