About the role

UNSW Law is seeking to appoint two Research Fellows to work with Scientia Professor Ross Buckley and Dr Anton Didenko on Prof Buckley’s Australian Research Council (ARC) Laureate Research Program entitled “The Financial Data Revolution: Seizing the Benefits, Controlling the Risks”.

  • Salary: $96,404 - $103,112 per year (plus 17% employer superannuation and leave loading)
  • 2 x positions - 1 x 1.0FTE & 1x 0.8FTE
  • Fixed term for two years, with the possibility of extension
  • Full time, although candidates interested in fractional appointments are welcome to apply. One position is currently slated to be 0.8 FTE.

The successful candidate will contribute towards delivery of this Laureate Research Program. No one yet knows how to effectively regulate the rise of data and its algorithmic analysis. This project explores how to do this in the context of finance but many of our findings will have far broader applicability. For instance, our work on how to regulate Artificial Intelligence in finance should apply widely to many of the contexts in which AI is being used from sentencing offenders to diagnosing illness.

This is a unique opportunity to join a research team with a remarkable trajectory. Prof Buckley’s joint research on FinTech and RegTech is the most downloaded in the world from the Social Science Research Network. His work has attracted considerable international acclaim and is routinely used by the world’s leading financial regulators. There will also be the opportunity to gain experience by co-supervising a PhD candidate.

About the ARC Laureate Project

We are at the beginning of a data revolution. This five-year project aims to make Australia’s legal and regulatory systems fit to deal with the utterly transformative rise of data and its algorithmic analysis. The project will identify reforms to laws and regulatory approaches to reap the major benefits and limit the major risks of this transformation. This work will inform law reforms and changes in regulatory approaches here and abroad.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Demonstrated ability to carry out independent research, including qualitative and empirical research;
  • Excellent writing skills; &
  • A PhD in Law, economics, finance, political science or cognate area or equivalent research and/or professional experience (such as professional experience as a banking and finance, data or IP lawyer).
