The University of Helsinki’s Faculty of Arts ( ) is Finland’s oldest and largest unit of teaching and research in the arts in terms of the organisation and selection of its discipline. It is also a significant international community fostering research, education and cultural interaction.

The Faculty of Arts of the University of Helsinki invites applications for two positions as


for a fixed term of 4,5 years. The starting date is negotiable, preferably during spring 2020. There will be a trial period of six months in the beginning.

One position is in the field of philosophy of mind and a second one in the field of metaphysics. The positions are part of the University of Helsinki profiling action on ‘Mind and Matter – foundations of information, intelligence and consciousness’, aiming to strengthen new interdisciplinary research areas at the university. The appointed candidates are expected to have a solid background in philosophy and a research profile aligned with the research profile of the discipline of Theoretical Philosophy, which will host the two researchers. In addition, the candidates should be able to demonstrate expertise required for cooperating with the other researchers working in the profiling action. The profiling action Mind and Matter consists of several positions placed in different faculties: "Social and legal implications of AI", "Natural and artificial cognitive systems", "Experimental mind and brain research", "Philosophy of mind and matter", "Artificial and human intelligence", "Implications of the use of AI on learning and education", and "Foundations of quantum information, logic, and computing”. Theoretical Philosophy on the other hand has a research focus on Logic, History of Philosophy, Epistemology, and Philosophy of Science.

We are inviting applications from candidates with an international research profile, one in philosophy of mind and a second one in metaphysics (including metaphysics of science) with an interdisciplinary approach that seeks to answer traditional philosophical questions in a way informed by empirical sciences ranging from physics to cognitive science. In addition, the candidate must provide evidence of both readiness to collaborate in interdisciplinary research teams in one of the areas mentioned above, and to contribute to the daily life and teaching (10% of the working hours) of the host discipline (Theoretical Philosophy). The University of Helsinki, and the Mind and Matter action in particular, offer excellent potential collaborators in the relevant areas. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to teach and develop teaching in a wide range of topics in both theoretical and empirically informed philosophy of mind or metaphysics at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The appointee will participate in the interaction between science and society at large, and prior experience in doing so will be considered an asset.


An appointee to the position of a university researcher shall hold a doctoral degree and present documentation of scholarly research work as well as have the teaching skills necessary for the position.

The position requires the ability to carry out independent scientific work and obtain external research funding with potential of leading a research group. Furthermore, the successful candidate is expected to have competence and motivation for scientific career proven by scientific publications, acquisition of research funding, and other academic activities including administrative duties. Scholarly work outside Finland and evidence of international cooperation are particularly appreciated. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must be fluent in English.

The research profile of the candidate is also expected to be connected with the research done at the Faculty of Arts, especially the discipline of Theoretical Philosophy.

When considering applicants’ qualifications, attention will be paid to:

· applicant’s expertise in the research fields (philosophy of mind in one case and metaphysics in the other)
· experience in interdisciplinary research
· scientific publications of a high quality in the field of the positions
· documented success in obtaining external research funding
· international research experience
· vision for development of the applicant’s own research work and the research field in general
· interaction and language skills

The research will be supported through collaborations with the existing research groups in the field of study at University of Helsinki and the hosting discipline.

The overall starting gross salary will be ca. 3 600-4 500 €/month, depending on the previous relevant research experience of the candidate.
