The Department of Political Science has an open climate that encourages involvement in broader societal debates. Research areas of specialization include elections, democracy, corruption, governance, globalisation, environmental politics and European studies. The Department hosts research programmes such as the QoG Institute, Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem), Centre for Collective Action Research, (CeCAR), Governance and Local Development (GLD) and the Swedish National Election Studies Programme. We offer several degree programmes at undergraduate, Master’s and doctoral level, as well as freestanding courses. Education is provided in both Swedish and English. We have a total of 1 300 students and a staff of about 160. The Department is centrally located in the city of Gothenburg.

The Program on Governance and Local Development (GLD) is directed by Professor Ellen Lust and is a research program aiming to explain variation in governance and local development in an effort to promote human welfare globally. Read more about the research program on our website at www.gld.gu.se

The Department of Political Science and GLD is now searching for additional expertise to join GLD's data team full time for an appointment of 6 months. 

Job assignments

The main assignment is to assist the program researchers with developing and implementing data analysis plans for publications. This includes participating in discussions about analysis plans, researching new methods, writing code for model fitting and analysis of experimental data, and data visualization. The data analyst will write preliminary reports as well as create publication quality tables and graphs. When necessary, the data analyst will also assist with the interpretation of analysis results.

Other assignments include collaborating with the data team to address data centered issues at GLD.

The job is performed in close collaboration with the GLD team including the program statistician, program director, project coordinator, post-doctoral research fellows, PhD students, interns, and affiliated faculty around the world.

Qualifications

We are looking for you who have the necessary skillset to successfully carry out the job assignments as described.

To apply you will need a degree in Statistics, Data Analytics, Data Science or other related field. You should have a minimum of two courses in statistics/econometrics/quantitative methods and have extensive knowledge of quantitative methodologies and data analysis. Further you need to have demonstrated skills in data processing (cleaning data, merging data, etc) and demonstrated proficiency in at least one statistical software (STATA, R, SPSS, JMP, Python, etc). You are a fast learner and have a demonstrated ability to quickly learn new types of software. As our team is international you need the ability to communicate clearly and confidently in English with our team, verbal and written.

The following qualifications, while not required, are advantageous:

  • Previous experience in a research project, particularly with quantitative focus
  • Previous experience using RMarkdown for report writing
  • Previous experience with data monitoring
  • Previous experience with survey design and creation
  • Previous experience using Microsoft Teams
  • Previous experience using SharePoint
  • Knowledge of GDPR
  • Basic knowledge of experimental design and analysis
  • Experience working with an interdisciplinary team

You need to be able to work well with a large, fluid and diverse team. You must have the flexibility to adjust to changing priorities and ask for clarifications and help when needed. You must have an eye for detail, be good at planning, organizing and be a problem solver.

We expect you, with the assistance of the program statistician, to learn new statistical methods and software when necessary. Additionally, you will need to able to explain new techniques to your fellow researchers. We expect you to have excellent collaboration and communication skills, verbal and written. Fluency in English, conversational and technical, is required since it is the working language of the GLD Program.

We will make an overall assessment and the applicant considered to be best qualified to carry out the duties described above will be appointed to the position.

It is an asset to have worked with the tasks described in the job assignment.
