The Department of Political Science has an open climate which encourages involvement in broader societal debates. Research areas of specialization include elections, democracy, corruption, governance, globalization, environmental politics as well as European studies. The department houses research programs such as QoG institute, Center for Collective Action Research (CeCAR), Varieties of Democracy (V- Dem), Governance and local development (GLD) and The Swedish Election Studies Program. The department offers education on all levels; undergraduate, graduate and PhD, carried out in both English and Swedish. We have a total of 1,300 students enrolled in our courses, and 160 people are employed at the Department. The Department is centrally located in the city of Gothenburg.

Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) is a large-scale, international data collection and research-program. The V-Dem Institute, Directed by Professor Staffan I. Lindberg, with its 15 staff is the headquarters. It  hosts several additional research programs. For more information: https://v-dem.net.

With funding from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs-Sweden, we will now set up a permanent analysis and advise function for conducting and translating research for policy-makers and practitioners, facilitate knowledge building and sharing, and offering of policy and strategic advice. Offering evidence-based strategic policy advice, which identifies important topics (supply) and meets policy needs (demand) will be at the core of this position.

V-Dem Institute is now seeking an Analyst for Research-Based Strategic and Policy Advice

This is an excellent opportunity for candidates interested in working for a respected institute, engaging with international institutions, governments, NGOs, and think-tanks to lead our research-based strategic work on democracy support and protection. The V-Dem Institute is engaged in many collaborations with policy-practitioners and institutions such as the World Bank, UNDP, The European Commission, ministries of foreign affairs, and international and national NGOs as well as think-tanks.

Job Assignments

The main task is to advance the Institute’s policy-relevant research, outreach, and policy advice on democracy support and democracy protection. The Analyst will contribute to designing and delivering innovative, high-quality, and policy-relevant research with a focus on democratization, autocratization, as well as democracy support and protection. This includes to work closely with the research team and the Director of the Institute to conduct analyses both on issues requested from the policy-and practitioners’ community (demand), and on topics identified as important for them to know about (supply), including regular policy relevant analysis and advise for the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. You will also be expected to write persuasive research papers, policy briefs, country analyses, op-eds, and other knowledge products for an audience in the field of democracy support and protection. The job will include responsibility to coordinate, delegate, and ensure that the final reports, deliverables, event memos, and other requested documents are submitted properly and in timely manner.

The Analyst is expected to take a leading role in communication, advicing, and networking with practitioners and policymakers in research and advisory processes, and to disseminate results. In this role the analysts will develop and facilitate relations between the V-Dem Institute and its partners among multi- and bilateral organizations, governments, organizations, think-tanks, and stakeholders in the democracy support and protection community.

The analyst will help organize, host, and speak at conferences such as the annual Policy Dialogue Day, but also panel discussions, debates, and other policy events to communicate research findings and provide policy-relevant advice.  It will be expected to be available for domestic and international business trips on a regular and possibly frequent basis.

The person we seek to hire will lead this work in close collaboration with the Director and may also be asked to serve as a member of the Institute’s Management Team.

Qualifications 

The ideal candidate will not only be an excellent researcher who is able to quickly produce high-quality written content relevant for democracy support and protection, but also an engaging speaker who knows the workings of international cooperation around democracy support and policy-making.

Required qualifications:

  • A university degree  (preferably a PhD) in political science, international development, development economics, public policy, law, or a related field. 
  • A minimum of two-three years’ experience in international/national or regional organization, or think-tank (development- or research environment).
  • A strong command of research principles, concepts, practices, and methods.
  • Experience with conducting research-based analyses, as well as ability to synthesize findings from existing research and proficiently articulate this to policy-makers and practitioners.
  • Superior English communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Highly proactive and flexible, with an ability to work on multiple projects in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to negotiate successfully with a wide range of cultural awareness.

Advantageous criteria include:

  • A record of writing, clear, succinct, and persuasive research papers, policy briefs, country analyses, op-eds, and other materials for an audience of policymakers and practitioners.
  • Experience with externally funded project and contract management including financial reporting, as well as sourcing external funding.
  • Prior knowledge and use of V-Dem data in applied research or similar evidence of familiarity with the project.
  • Experience working collaboratively on a large-scale projects and of outreach, especially translating and communicating research to policy-makers/practitioners.
  • Other language skills (French, German, Spanish in particular)
  • Personal qualities and team-working skills are highly relevant for the position and are of great importance.
