1–2 Temporary Senior Lecturers in Digital Humanities at a Scope of 50–100%

Published: 2021-03-1

Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 45,000 students, more than 7,000 employees and a turnover of around SEK 7 billion.

The Department of Archival Studies, Information Studies, Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies (ALM) conducts studies at the second-cycle level as part of the Master Programme in Digital Humanities (DH), and the Master Programme in Archival Studies, Information Studies, Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies (ALM). The department also conducts doctoral-level studies in library and information science. The department currently has about twenty teachers and researchers, plus eight doctoral students. In addition, the Department of ALM, on the initiative of the Faculty of Arts, is hosting development work for digital humanities as a new field for faculty-wide and field-wide collaborations in research, education and infrastructure at Uppsala University. This venture is currently in an expansive stage, among other things through formation of a centre and infrastructural support in DH.

We are now seeking one full time or two part time temporary senior lecturers for our Master Programme in Digital Humanities. The temporary lecturers will be part of a unique and expanding DH environment and have the opportunity to gain experience and collaborate with different parts of our DH environment.

Duties: Duties include teaching and examination, primarily in the Master Programme in Digital Humanities, as well as research. Teaching and examination in the Master Programme in Archival Studies, Information Studies, Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies are also possible. The teaching included in the duties relates to applying broad and inclusive perspectives on digital humanities in a theoretically in-depth and practically-anchored way, and creating in-depth understanding and knowledge of digital methods, digital source materials, and digital research infrastructure.

Teaching includes management, planning, course responsibility and course administration, teaching both on campus and remotely, as well as supervision. It also includes staying abreast of research developments in digital humanities, the field of ALM, and societal development in general that are of significance for the work at the University. Duties also include planning and implementing an integration of mutually relevant courses and course components in the Master Programme in ALM and digital humanities. Duties include collaboration with researchers specialised in digital humanities at both Uppsala University and other higher education institutions. Teaching is mainly in English, but teaching in Swedish is a possibility.

Qualifications: Eligibility for employment as a temporary senior lecturer requires the candidate to have a PhD in a subject area relevant to the duties, documented experience of teaching in English, demonstrated teaching expertise, and the personal characteristics, such as good cooperation and communication skills, to perform the duties of the post well. The candidate's teaching expertise, research expertise and professional expertise must be relevant to the subject content and duties of the position.

Assessment criteria: In the selection among eligible applicants teaching expertise will be more valued compared to research expertise.

Teaching expertise: In assessing teaching expertise, ability, i.e. teaching quality, shall be the prime consideration. The teaching expertise shall be well-documented. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, shall also be afforded consideration. Consideration shall be given to the ability to plan, initiate, lead, and develop teaching and instruction, supervision and examination at all levels, as well as the ability to connect research to teaching. The ability to interact with actors inside and outside the University in relation to issues of teaching and learning in higher education is also included in teaching expertise. Documented experience of teaching in Swedish is also desirable.

Research expertise: In assessing research expertise, research capabilities, i.e. research quality, shall be the prime consideration. The scope of research, in regard to both depth and breadth, shall also be afforded consideration. Knowledge of the conditions, craftsmanship and consequences of digitisation for both humanities research and the ALM and cultural heritage sectors is desirable. Documented experience in research collaborations in DH is also desirable.

Other expertise: Administrative and management expertise are also significant to the position and will be assigned weight.

Administrative expertise is demonstrated through, for example, the capacity to plan, organise and prioritise work in a suitable and effective manner, as well as the ability to specify and adhere to time frames. This form of expertise includes overall work planning; ability to manage resources in a way that reflects operational priorities; and ability to work in a structured manner and on the basis of an awareness of goals and quality.

The selection process may include interviews and reference taking. Applicants must therefore provide a list of references who can shed light on their professional expertise and personal characteristics relevant to the position, such as collaborative skills and leadership skills.

Personal circumstances (such as parental leave, part-time work due to care of a child, union experience, military service or similar) that may be in the applicant’s favour in the evaluation of qualifications should be stated in the list of qualifications and experience.

Application process: A complete application must be submitted via the Uppsala University recruitment system and include:

Cover letter List of appendices Curriculum vitae Presentation of scientific qualifications List of publications Presentation of teaching qualifications Presentation of other qualifications List of references.

Uppsala University values the qualities that equal gender distribution/gender parity and diversity bring to its activities. We therefore welcome applicants of all genders and with different birth backgrounds, functional capacity and life experience.
